The Beeches Come To Burnham

Outdoor Culture worked with Mona Lisa Arts and Media and artist Lynda Cornwell to present an outdoor art installation as part of Burnham’s annual Christmas Fair on 2 December 2010.

With the help of a local youth group, Lynda photographed the ancient trees from the nearby Burnham Beeches Nature Reserve, and then manipulated the images to produce slowly shifting films.  In the final pieces, many of the images mutate over time from traditional landscape to twisted, neon fantasy.  The films were projected large-scale onto the buildings of the village High Street, pedestrianised for the event.

The project sought to reconnect the community of Burnham with the famous wood that bears it name.  We also wanted to play with Christmas tree and solstice traditions, by using light in the darkest time of the year to celebrate life and rebirth in the natural world.
